In Her Own Words

Michelle Schulp, just another great speaker Coming to WordCamp Omaha!

I suppose it was inevitable that I became a designer- I’d been drawing, painting, doodling, and making complex pictures and animations on my parents’ old computer since I was old enough to hold a pencil, paintbrush, or mouse!

Though I suppose I am what you’d consider “a creative” (the hair doesn’t give it away?) I’ve always been more fascinated by the “left-brained” problem solving aspect of design. In addition to Visual Communications, I studied Psychology and Sociology at Purdue University, in order to better understand how people interact with the world and with each other. I feel that this knowledge has given me a deeper understanding of why design principles work, and how to use them to best fit different circumstances. I am especially fascinated by Usability and User Experience, as I think that the way the user engages with a design is just as important, if not more so, than its aesthetic appearance.

I am always reading blogs about design, social media, business, and technology to keep up-to-date with the latest and greatest in my field. In addition to my piles of design books, I am an avid reader of all sorts, and I play the flute in a local community band. I love incorporating clean, yet personable design into the rest of my life. Whether decorating a room or selecting an outfit, I try to always do everything with a purpose and in a way that can communicate my own personal brand to the world.
